93 Youths Got Acquainted with SDGs at Leadership Workshop and Youth Forum



Leadership workshop and youth forum on sustainable development goals (SDGs) was held at World Trade Center, Tripureswor on Saturday. Asia-Pacific Peace and Development Service Alliance (APPDSA) Convening highlighted service, volunteerism and youth engagement. The full-day youth forum was organized by Global Peace Foundation Nepal in collaboration with  youth led organization, AIESEC to enhance knowledge and strategies with regard to youth participation in sustainable development. This forum was organized to depict the ways in which youth can balance between their rights and responsibilities.

The program had 3 extensive sessions Global Leadership Workshop, Sustainable Development Topic and Panelist Discussion and Idea Pitching Session. The first session was facilitated by AIESEC's President Naryanan S who gave an extensive leadership guidelines, presentation and exercises to 93 youth participants. SDGs topic in Quality Education, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Peace, Justice and Strong Institution and overall SDGs/partnership for goals was discussed in the program.

The sessions were well designed to equip the youth to transition their learning associated with enhancing individual leadership capacity to group/team innovation capacity so as to further extend it into open innovation environments. The workshop facilitated the youth to unleash their strengths and discover what they are good at and how to leverage on them a fulfilled life. Furthermore, the interested participants will get a chance to develop their idea into a proposal by GPF's mentorship and the best proposal will be granted $500 as seed money for their project at the end of December.

In order to encourage youth force several creative ways will be exercised leading to a competition ensuring practical measures for achieving sustainable development goals said the President Ram Rohan Pant of Global Peace Foundation Nepal. Nikesh Balami, Civil Entrepreneur of Code for Nepal emphasized the use of technology for youth leadership. "Young people have been using social media to connect with people and for recreation purpose. But they should be motivated to use media and technology to promote social campaigns, Balami said. He further added that youth should have access to the government data.

"The sustainable development goals are very ambitious in itself and the decision to involve youth to implement it is a very good approach," said Bhawana Bhatta, Executive Board Member of National Youth Council. Similarly, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Youth and Sports Ram Prasad Thapaliya said that youth must have extensive knowledge of politics, society, economy, and technology and work for the development collectively.

APPDSA is the outcome of initiation of the forum of 300 young leaders of Asia and the Pacific-and other participants at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok on 28 October 2014, including representatives of national and the private sector for lively debates and discussion on many challenges in clusters concerning the environment, health service, disaster, culture of peace and youth entrepreneurship. The series of Asia-Pacific Forum on Youth Volunteerism to Promote Participation, Development, and Peace was held on 28 October 2014 in Bangkok, on March 23 – 24, 2015 in Kathmandu, Nepal, on June 26, 2015 in Ulaanbaatar and on October 8, 2015 in Seoul, Republic of Korea, on April 23 - 24, 2016 in Lalitpur and on 20th April 2017 in Kathmandu, Nepal. More than 1000 youths had already participated in the APPDSA convening representing various nations.

This forum is expected to develop the Moral and Innovative Leadership amongst the participants empowering them to take ownership and leadership in Sustainable Development Goals.
