The implementation of lead paint standard has increased comparing to previous years, a recent study shows.

The study called “Compliance Monitoring of Lead Paint Standard in Nepal 2017” carried out by the Centre for Public Health and Environmental Development (CEPHED )and Leaders Nepal has shown  that the increased implementation of the lead paint standard.

Of the total 37 enamel paint samples from 17 different companies picked for the study, around 60 percent had complied with the government standard of 90 ppm set in December 2014.

Study revealed that over 59.46 per cent of paints  have been found fully comply with the Government of Nepal standard of 90 ppm against just 30 per cent compliance during the year 2016 by the ministry itself.

A week long International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action (ILPPWA) 2017 program has been launched in Nepal under the theme 'lead free kids for a healthy future'.

The programme aimed at creating awareness over the issue from October 23 to 29.

According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), the lead exposure was responsible for 800,000 deaths globally in 2013.

The program is organized by CEPHED & LEADERS Nepal, in collaboration with Department of Environment with the support of WHO Country Office for Nepal and IPEN as well as all in association with NEFEJ, Nepal Bar Association, PRO PUBLIC, Kathmandu Medical College and Samyak Diagnostic Pvt. Ltd

ILPPW 2017 has globally called by Global Alliance to Elimination Lead Paint (GAELP), a joint initiative of WHO and UNEP aiming towards protection public health especially children and environment from the toxic ill effects of lead in paints.
