Embracing the slogan ‘Our Place, Our Planet and Our Responsibility’, more than 36, 000 participants and over 400 community entities and organisations donated their time and energy to the nationwide cleanup in 152 locations in 38 districts resulting in the collection of over 100 tonnes of waste.On the occasion of the Clean up The World weekend, Clean up Nepal has undertaken its fourth annual nationwide cleanup on 17 September. Clean-ups were carried out at the same time at over 152 locations throughout Nepal between 7am and 11am.

Clean up Nepal organised the opening ceremony for the Annual Nationwide Cleanup 2016 at Taumadi Square, Bhaktpur at 8.00 am amidst members of the community, and representatives from various organisations.In the opening ceremony, HE Glenn White, Australian Ambassador to Nepal said, "The best way to clean up is to not irresponsibly discard rubbish in the first place. Campaigns like these are important in raising awareness among people that maintaining clean surroundings is important for whole communities, and to act individually and together in that common cause."

Kiran Bajracharya, Superintendent of Police, Bhaktapur said, "Nepal Police is ready to support as and when necessary in such type of community activities. Cleanup campaigns are necessary as they help to develop habit of regular cleanup in the community."Amod Karmacharya, Executive Director of Clean up Nepal said, "Nationwide Cleanup Campaign is not just about picking up rubbish. Through the act of picking up rubbish, it aims to provide an ongoing platform for raising awareness on local environmental issues amongst the wider Nepalese community."

Cleanups were conducted in 38 districts including Accham, Bajura, Bardiya, Bhaktapur, Chitwan, Dadeldhura, Dailekh, Dang, Dhanusa, Dolpa, Gorkha, Gulmi, Humla, Ilam, Jajarkot, Jhapa, Jumla, Kalikot, Kaski, Kathmandu, Kavrepalanchowk, Lalitpur, Lamjung, Morang, Mugu, Nawalparasi, Nepalgunj, Okhaldhunga, Pyuthan, Rolpa, Rukum, Rupandehi, Salyan, Saptari, Sarlahi, Siraha, Sunsari and Surkhet.

Nepal Red Cross Society coordinated cleanups in 20 districts engaging over 3345 individuals and collected 3461 kilos of waste. Similarly Solid Waste Management Association Nepal (SWMAN) coordinated cleanups in 20 locations in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur and Morang districts engaging 2248 individuals and collected over 23 tonnes of waste, and Nepalese Youth for Climate Action conducted cleanups in 4 districts engaging 139 volunteers and collected 848 kilos of waste.

The Australian Embassy continued its ongoing funding of the nationwide event this year, which enabled Clean up Nepal to coordinate and increase reach to many partners and also provide cleanup kits to some of the local partners who were in need. Significant contributions were done by different organizations Nepal Red Cross Society, Solid Waste Management Association Nepal, Nepalese Youth for Climate Action, Scientology Volunteer Minister Nepal, Keep Itahari Clean, Bagmati Welfare Society Nepal, Rotaract clubs, Leo clubs, and various other local partners to coordinate and conduct community cleanups throughout the country.

In 2013, the first ever nationwide cleanup was introduced by Clean up Nepal, a not-for-profit volunteer-driven organisation consisting of volunteers from Nepal and Australia. With 15,430 volunteers and 25 cities participating across Nepal, the response to the 2013 event exceeded expectations. Australia’s Ambassador to Nepal, HE Glenn White, along with the Australian Embassy staff, supported the joint Australia/Nepal initiative by volunteering their time at the UN Park cleanup site.

In 2014, embracing the slogan ‘Join the Green Revolution: Stop Neighbourhood Pollution’, more than 20,000 volunteers and 240 community entities and organisations donated their time and energy to the nationwide cleanup resulting in the collection of 106,045 kilos of waste.

In 2015, clean-ups were carried out at the same time at over 100 locations throughout Nepal between 7am and 11am. More than 39, 000 participants and 300 community entities and organisations donated their time and energy to the nationwide cleanup resulting in the collection of 2, 82,979 kilos of waste.

Since the 2013 event, more than 110,000 individuals in Nepal have collected over 500,000 kilograms of rubbish through Clean up Nepal's Annual Nationwide Cleanup Initiative.
