In Nepal, Most of the trees are exotic. More than 95 percent trees that we see these days are not the organic trees of Nepal. The experts are of the view that the exotic trees started to be brought to Nepal since the Rana regime. In the past 50 years, the numbers of exotic trees have gradually increased.

According to Krishna Kumar Shrestha, the professor of Botany at Tribhuvan University, “Exotic trees come in the primary choice of many who are in the search of the fast growing trees. These exotic trees don't demand more water and fertilizer like other species.” According to him, "These exotic trees from the towns can enter into village and ultimately to the forest as well. This poses a serious threat of existence to all the organic trees which may result into the over-crowding of exotic trees in the nation."

The widely seen tree species like Masala, Kapur , Sirish, Kaiyo , Laharpipal and Kalki all are exotic trees . According to Dipak Lamichane from National Botanical Garden, The trees are brought into Nepal without the adequate research and study.

Exotic trees can harm the organic trees outnumbering them provided their easy adaptability.

Trees in and around Tribhuvan University
Before the Establishment of the Tribhuvan University, all the land were being used for farming. After the decision to establish the university was translated into action, the Trees were gradually planted. In the search of the fast growing trees, all the exotic trees were planted with heavy preference. Kapur , Shirish and Masala trees are abundantly found in the University.

According to the experts, many Australian trees have entered the Nepalese forests in the name of Australian bilateral support. According to Professor Shrestha, "After long years of exposure to our climate conditions, these exotic trees no longer appear to be as the foreign species these days."
